My Model
My Leadership Model (supporting narrative)
Leadership is a complex subject within organizations, communities, or institutions. Northouse (2016) defines leadership as the process by which an individual influences a group of people to achieve a shared goal. Furthermore, the conceptualization of leadership emphasizes that a leader needs to apply positive personality traits, behaviors, and cognition skills.
My leadership model is the fusion of the transformational leadership theory, relational leadership model, and ethical leadership. The transformational leadership theory, relational leadership model, and ethical leadership emphasize that healthy relationships between leaders and followers improve organizational effectiveness and positive outcomes.
The literature describes how the transformational leader fosters the followers' professional development and how establishing a collaborative approach creates a vision toward a shared goal. As a scholar-practitioner, I create professional development opportunities and assist followers in exploring areas of interest. Furthermore, I cultivate an environment of inquiry to facilitate critical thinking.
The intentional leadership model promotes openness and a collaborative approach to achieve personal and organizational goals. The relational leadership model supports this action. The relational leadership model considers the social, cognitive, and political elements involved in the participants' relationships. The relational process is dynamic, collaborative, and promotes decentralization of leadership, which provides opportunities to individuals in different levels of the organization (Hosking, 2011). Within the relational leadership model, we observe an ongoing exchange of knowledge among the leaders and followers, facilitating all participants' development.
My leadership model's foundation reflects intention, confidence, determination, and an openness to collaborate with others. I believe that at the core, a good leader must establish a well-understood foundation of consistently applied ethics- "Doing the right thing, at the right time." As an ethical leader, I promote fairness and offer equal opportunities to all followers. Ethical leadership encourages fairness to encourage the well-being of the organization, community, or individuals.
I incorporate a leadership approach where the leader is sensitive to the needs of those under them and applies selfless wisdom to inspire others and assist the followers in their development. I believe a visionary leader does not discard the past, is aware of the present, and looks to the future with optimism and openness.
